This is my first performance for an audience of strangers at the now infamous Continental Baths where Bette exploded from.
I had just finished making my first album for Bell Records and this show was an audition for the executives there to convince them to back my first tour.
The band consisted of the finest studio musicians and singers in New York. I had put together a strong set, but had never performed before.
This was a brand new experience for me and I didn’t have a clue as to how to be a performer.
But I think you’ll hear hints of the kind of shows I began to develop over the years.
Bell decided to back that first tour and off we went.
Little did I know that two of those songs would predict my future: “Jimmy Jones” did turn into “Sweetwater Jones” and the lyric “I’m gonna have a sweet life” would come true.
