This month’s MTV is really the “Baby Barry Show”!
It’s kind of a home movie of the rehearsal for the very first show I would do in small night clubs.
I had just signed with Bell Records and had just finished making my first album. The record label wanted me out on the road promoting the album. So, I put a band and three girl singers together and we rehearsed for a few weeks.
The band and the singers sounded great. I loved my arrangements and my original songs.
There was only one clunker in the group. Me!
I had never fronted a band. I had never put a show together with me as the lead singer.
So, I had one of my friends video tape the rehearsal and I invited a few friends to watch our rehearsal before we opened at the first club.
Whenever I watch “The Rehearsal At Carroll’s” (“Carroll’s was a popular rehearsal studio in Manhattan) I’m proud of my songs and my arrangements. The band and singers are great. But when I watch myself, I cringe.
I cannot, for the life of me, see a budding superstar performer singing and talking at the piano.
But fate surprises us all. Because now we all know what became of that shy, awkward young guy at the piano. It just amazes me.
Maybe it will amaze you too.
Oh, and one beautiful thing happens at the end.
I say, “Thanks for coming. Wish me luck!”
Wow.

The show is from Birmingham, UK on January 11, 1986.
It was the last show of a 14-month long tour that started as the Paradise Tour and morphed into the Co... -

The show was taped in 2009 during the BMIFC Convention.
To make the three Convention shows special, I decided to stage songs from “Here At The Mayflower”, the album that had gotten such positive reaction when it was released in 2001 – 8 years ea...
